Cybersonics Inc. traces its history back to the early 1950's when Murdock Laboratories, one of the first companies formed to exploit the new technology of ultrasonics, was formed. In 1958 Murdock Laboratories changed its name, under new ownership to Blackstone Ultrasonics Inc.

While Blackstone grew as a supplier of ultrasonic technology for industrial cleaning and soldering, it also became heavily involved in medical innovation. It participated in the development of a variety of innovative products for the medical industry, including the first percutaneous ultrasonic kidney stone lithotripter and the first minimally invasive intravascular wire for plaque ablation.

As the company grew, the need to provide specialized research and technical resources to the medical and associated industries became increasingly apparent and a separate company - Cybersonics - was formed in 1995.

Cybersonics' initial focus was on the development of minimally invasive ultrasonic devices for the removal of plaque from arteries, and on the supply of ultrasonic tanks for cleaning surgical instruments to OEM suppliers of hospitals. The past 5 years have seen a steady growth and expanded focus which now includes totally non-invasive instruments for thrombosis. Technology developed for various medical applications has also been adapted into products for a number of other niche markets where Cybersonics Inc. has established a dominant position.
